Frequently Asked Questions - Robert Morris University

What should I bring to Camp?

Remember that this is suggested and you can adjust to your own personal needs-12 pairs sweat socks, 1 pair good basketball sneakers, 7 t-shirts, 5 pairs shorts, 1 sweat suit or sweat shirt, 3 towels, 1 blanket or sleeping bag, 2 sheets, 1 pillow and pillow case, toilet articles and one mostly white or white t-shirt for the playoffs. Do not bring your own basketball; we have plenty of our own for camp.

What time should I arrive at Camp?

You should try to arrive between 2pm and 4pm. This arrival time will enable you to:

a. Check –In (at the Parking Lot near WASHINGTON Dorm)

b. Receive room and league assignment

c. Stow your gear in your room

d. Change into basketball clothing

e. Familiarize yourself with the facility

Please Note: the first meal of the day will be dinner so please either pack a lunch or eat before arriving at camp.

What is needed at Check-In?

Each camper will need a $50 room and key deposit, which is refundable at the conclusion of the session when the key is returned and there is no damage to the room. Also any money or valuable that you wish to check in to the Canteen should be brought to Check-In.

Any tuition that is owed will be collected at Check-In and must be paid in Cash, Money Order, or Credit Card. No checks will be accepted.

What Transportation is Available?

We provide a shuttle service to and from Pittsburgh International Airport (code PIT) and to and from the Greyhound Bus Station and Amtrak Train Station in Pittsburgh. Our shuttle will pick up between Noon and 3 pm on check-in day, it costs $40.

Once at the airport please wait in the baggage claim area near the rental car desks, inside the airport, at the bus and train station please wait inside the station for a Five-Star Representative. To take our shuttle back to the airport/ bus/train station, please schedule your departure after 4 pm.

Please Note – if the camper is traveling as an UNACCOMPANIED MINOR, please notify use immediately. We will let know what name to put down as the person receiving your son. There is a $40 fee for this service. Please realize that your child is very important to us and we will make every attempt to pick him up on time.

Can I Arrive a day Early or Stay a day Late?

We are able to accommodate anyone arriving a day early or staying a day late at this facility for a fee of $60.

Can I Stay On Campus if I am staying for Two or more Camps in a row?

Yes, if you are staying for multiple camps you will be able to stay on campus and we will do everything we can to keep you in the same room. You will receive meals (lunch and dinner the day camps ends and brunch the day the next camp begins) and their will be entertainment (movies in the Sewall Center) and a late night snack. Their will be NO BASKETBALL on the in-between days. There is a $40 fee for this service. NOTE: THERE IS A CHARGE ONLY IF ONE CAMP ENDS AND THE OTHER STARTS THE NEXT DAY...THIS FEE IS NOT CHARGED IF THE CAMP ENDS AND THE NEXT STARTS THE SAME DAY

When Does Camp End?

Camp ends after the Awards Ceremony approximately 11:30 am on the last day of camp. Check-Out will begin approximately 11 am at the Gazebo. Campers will turn in their key, receive their room & key deposit and any canteen money and valuables they turned in. all camp transportation will leave from here following the awards ceremony.

From the North

Take I-79 south to Exit 66 (Sewickley/Emsworth). Follow Route 65 toward Sewickley. At the third light, turn left and cross the Sewickley Bridge. At the end of the bridge, turn right on University Boulevard. Follow 1.5 miles to the second light. Turn left into RMU.

From the South

Take I-79 north to the Airport-Route 22/30 West exit. Follow Route 22/30 west to Route 60 north. Take Exit 3, Business Route 60 (Moon). At the second light, turn right on University Boulevard. Follow 1.5 miles to the fourth light. Turn right into RMU.

From the East

Take the Pennsylvania Turnpike or I-80 to I-79 south. Follow directions from the north (above).

From the West

Take the Pennsylvania Turnpike to Exit 10 (New Castle). Follow Route 60 South 24 miles to Exit 8, Business Route 60 (Moon). Proceed four miles and turn left on University Boulevard. Follow 1.5 miles to the fourth light. Turn right into RMU.

From Downtown Pittsburgh

Take I-279 west toward Pittsburgh International Airport. Proceed on Route 22/30 west to Route 60 north. Take Exit 3, Business Route 60 (Moon). At the second light, turn right on University Boulevard. Follow 1.5 miles to the fourth light. Turn right into RMU.

From Pittsburgh International Airport

Take the airport exit to Route 60 north (Moon-Beaver). Follow to Exit 8, Business Route 60 (Flaugherty-Moon). After the stop sign, make the second right on Business Route 60 south (Moon). At the third light, turn left on University Boulevard. Follow 1.5 miles to the fourth light. Turn right into RMU.

What is the Canteen?

The canteen is a physical store in the Sewall Center selling Five-Star gear, snacks and drinks. The canteen is also a service that is provided to the campers, similar to a debt or credit account. When you arrive on campus you will be asked if you want to deposit any money in the canteen. Whatever amount you wish to deposit will become the amount of credit you have in the store. The canteen can also be used to purchase items forgotten at home (toothbrush, soap etc.) because the canteen staff will go into town each day to purchase these requested items. At the end of camp any unspent money will be returned to you in full.

Why should I put my money in the Canteen?

If you hold your money and wish to make cash purchases you can but at your own risk. Any money you lose or that is potentially stolen (left your door unlocked, etc) cannot be replaced. The money you put into account cannot be lost or stolen. In fact you can store your money with us and not spend any and have it all returned at the end. The Canteen will also hold on to any valuables such as plane tickets, I-pods, jewelry etc.

What is a Typical Day Like?

Our normal full camp day begins with a 7:30 wake up and normally runs until about 11pm.

When is the Deposit Due?

A deposit of $100 (minimum) is due with an application in order to reserve a spot.

When is the Balance Due?

The balance of the tuition is due 45 days prior to the first day of that camp.

What is including in the camp cost?

That price includes room, board, meals, tuition and Accident and Injury Insurance over and above campers’ family policy coverage. Campers will also receive a t-shirt and water bottle.

The tuition does not cover the room & key deposit ($50).

What is your refund policy?

DEPOSIT is refundable for each session only up to the due date for the balance of payment (45 days prior to camp), less a $50 administrative fee charged to ALL cancellations. Cancellations made 30 days prior to camp (if fully paid) will receive a 75% refund. Cancellations made between 29-15 days prior to camp (if fully paid) will receive a 75% credit for 2009. Cancellations made between 14-2 days prior to camp will receive a 50% credit for 2009. No refunds or credits for any cancellation made less than 48 hours prior to camp. Cancellations must be made in writing via email, fax or mail (no cancellations will be accepted over the phone). Credit is transferable to a relative or teammate.

Is Refund/Cancellation Insurance Available?

Yes! For $60 you can purchase Cancellation Insurance. This will allow a camper to cancel for any reason up to 48 hours before camp starts, there will be a full refund minus the $50 administrative fee.

What is the coach to camper ratio?

Traditionally we have a 6 to 1 camper to coach ratio.

Can my child pick his roommate?

We will honor roommate requests if space allows. We understand that campers are, in some cases, traveling long distances and wish to be roomed with their friends. With that in mind we will do our best to accommodate your request. If when you arrive you are not roomed together, we will attempt to room you together during check-in. Please request by noting on the application card, emailing or writing.

All other campers will be roomed based on age and location.

Please Note – we have limited three person rooms so we may not be able to accommodate all three person room requests. We will do our best to put two of the camper together and have the third camper as close as possible.

What is the supervision in the dorms/bunks etc.?

There are coaches on every floor of every dorm with the campers. Our well-trained staff monitors all activities including meals.

Can I come and watch?

All of our sites are open to coaches and parents to view at all times activities are planned. Meals and lodging must take place on campus for the camper. We do not allow day campers or commuters as it disrupts the program.

What are tryouts?

The teams at camp are not pre-arranged and each camper will be placed on a team after our coaches have had the opportunity to evaluate you during our first night tryouts.

How are tryout leagues assigned?

After dinner on arrival day we will take attendance by tryout league. Generally speaking at each camp we will have 3 leagues, NBA, NCAA & NIT. These 3 leagues are broken up by age and ability. The NIT is for the rising freshman and sophomores, the NCAA is for exceptional sophomores, juniors and seniors and the NBA is for the strongest seniors and any outstanding underclassmen. League tryout assignments are not necessarily the league that your child will play in.

Can my child move up to a higher league, or down to a lower one?

Yes. After tryouts your child will go to an orientation where he will meet some of the coaches and teachers for the week, learn the Five-Star and facility rules, and have the opportunity to ask questions. While that is going on our team coaches who watched your child play will discuss their abilities. If a camp has 420 players and we only play 10 on a team and there are 14 NBA teams, 14 NCAA teams and 14 NIT teams then there can only be 140 campers in each league. The coaches will vote on players to move up and move down.

What if my child had a bad tryout, was tired or just off his game for the tryout, can he still move up during the week?

Yes. If your child had a bad tryout and is a better player than he showed the first night, his play during the week can move him up if there are injuries in the league above.

Do I need a physical to attend camp?

No physical is required for this camp site.

Will college coaches be in attendance at the camps?

Yes. College coaches will be either on staff or in observance of the camp for all of the Robert Morris sessions

Does the camp offer exposure?

Yes. College coaches and scouting services will be in attendance.

Does the camp do evaluations of my play?

No. As per the NCAA rules the camp is not allowed to operate a scouting service and own a camp at the same time. If you are interested you should get your camp coaches name and email address and you can be in contact with him to discuss your areas of improvement. If you do not get your coaches information, we can provide it to you after camp.

What do you mean by the Five-Star unit rules?

Unlike high school, junior high and AAU every player will play at least one half of each game. You will either play in the 1st and 3rd quarters or the 2nd and 4th quarters depending on your ability.

What are the game rules?

7 minute stop-time quarters (NBA & NCAA), 6 minute stop-time quarters (NIT). 2 time outs per half, non-cumulative. Over time, 1st OT 3-minute stop, 2nd OT sudden death-win by 2. 4 fouls to sub in 1st half, 5 fouls to disqualify. Sub only-Injury. Bonus on 7th foul. Best players play in 2nd and 4th quarters. NO DUNKING. No zones, zone presses, ½ court traps. You can press full court man at any time, but you cannot double team in the backcourt until the 4th quarter. Player can be docked a game if missing an attendance-unexcused. Time outs are 45 seconds, 2minutes between quarters.

I am allergic to peanuts or other foods, I eat Kosher, Vegetarian, what do I do?

We will make every attempt to provide your child with healthy alternatives at each camp site and we suggest you send him with snacks to supplement if he is unable to eat all of the offerings. Please let the Athletic Trainer know of any allergies at Check-In.

Can I bring a cooler?

Yes. You can bring a cooler and dry ice, at some facilities you may ask the trainers for ice for your room.

Is there a refrigerator or microwave in the room?

No and please do not bring one.

Will we be able to watch TV or can I bring a TV?

No

How about a Walkman, Discman or MP3 player?

You can bring these items but must lock them in your room; they are not allowed outside of your room.

Can I bring a cell phone?

Yes. We ask that your cell phone stay locked in your room, they are not allowed outside of your room.

Will I be able to order pizza or food to campus?

No. You will have 3 meals and we will have pizza or food for sale each day if you wish to supplement.

Can I wear a hat, do-rag, earring, watch, jewlery or other adornments?

All those items should be left at home. You cannot play with them and they cannot be worn during the week.

Are trainers, doctors, nurses or other medical personnel available at camp?

Yes. Each morning our professional training staff can tape you. They are on call 24 hours a day for illness, injury and other maladies. If necessary, nearby medical facilities are available.

Can my child win an award if he plays well enough?

Yes. Awards are part of the program. Each camp ends with an awards ceremony.

What are the camp requirements regarding age and ability?

Generally speaking we accept between the ages of 12-18 years old (traditional camp), 9-14 years old (junior camp), 11-18 years old (specialty camp), 2nd-5th grade (day camp). There is no requirement based on ability.

What if my child turns the age of camp after the camp date?

For example you want your child to attend our basketball camp but he is only 11 and turns 12 in December. We can accept him in our camps as long as he turns the appropriate age in the same calendar year.
